But, how about TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia),and Greta Garbo. I can't think of anyone else to add to your list. There are people who reached very near the top, but then got married because it helped them negotiate that last rung up the ladder. But in our contemporary society, what constitutes marriage, given that common-law couplings are slowly becoming de rigueur ? It’s difficult to think of non-married people who were famous and contributed to humanity, for it seems to be the province of the married.
